Monteru Brandy Ippon is the third non-Japanese whisky and the first-ever French spirit to be aged exclusively in a new Japanese mizunara oak hand-crafted in Japan. Why is it named Ippon?
Ippon means 'one piece' and 'a perfect full point' as this is the highest score a fighter can achieve in judo, a Japanese martial art which is a highly regarded sport in France.
The Monteru Ippon brandies are available in an exclusive crystal bottle hand made in France by Lalique just for the Monteru Ippon limited edition. The Monteru Ippon One of One comes with a wood stand purchased from an antique store which was originally used to hold collector vases from Japan.
The brandy is made from folle Blanche grape varietal, 90% from 2014 and 10% from 2012, with an ABV of 43%. The brandy was initially matured in new and used French Limousine oak casks before being then transferred to a virgin Mizunara oak cask for about 12 months.
The colour is a bright golden yellow and the nose is fresh and vibrant as expected from the folle Blanche varietal. The initial aroma is sort of a resinous eucalyptus honey mix. On the palate, there are elegant aromas of spices especially cinnamon spices with a hint of clove hiding within, and a creamy finish. This brandy is surprising, as it is showing a non-traditional tasting profile for brandy. It's something else!
