Fine crisp and very classic there is plenty of fruit here, lemon, lime and grapefruit zest with a ripe juicy acidity, a strong complex terroir dimension is obvious, too, with its chalky, mineral touches. Purity and finesse abound in this absolutely classic Sancerre.

he Mader domaine is a very small quantity, high quality wine producer based in the picture postcard village of Hunawihr just south of Ribeauville. The family own just over 10 hectares of vineyards, includingย prized holdings of vines in the famous โRosackerโ Grand Cru vineyard and also now in the Grand cru Schlossberg. All vineyard work is carried out by hand and since 2005 their son Jerome is now running the estate having studied and gained a Diploma in Oenology. Since returning to the family estate Jerome has also converted all their vineyards to organic viticulture (certified organic since 2007).
Rieslings here are some of the few in Alsace produced in a classic fine dry style built to age. In exceptional years a tiny volume of late harvest โVendanges Tardiveโ Riesling is made in a similar fine, elegant style that ages superbly. Jerome is fanatical about quality so yields are kept very low and selections for all wines are extremely strict ensuring the highest quality in every bottle. The entire range of wines from the Mader family taste true to their grape varieties and vineyard origins and all represent fantastic value.
In June 2021 their 2019 Rieslings were both rated among the best of the vintage by Revue du Vins de France magazine who have also ranked the estate among the best of Alsace each year.

A slight decrease in the new oak used for Lady A continues to bear fruit, giving a warm vintage full opportunity to glow: a tropical, grassy noseโwith hints of some creamy, bread-y lees characterโstill holds enough oak (cedar, vanilla) to balance well. The palate, as usual, is lush, broad and beautifully textured, with a bit of smoky, mid-palate flint and good acidity drawing into a long, baked-pineapple finish. Complex, ripe, and intense. Ancient vine of the Roman era, Fiano was named Latino to distinguish the vine from the origins of Greco. It is a rigorous vine that prospers well in soils of volcanic origin as in these clay deposits. Its entymology refers to Apanius and the apiane grapes mentioned by Columella and Pliny. Its name was traced back to the bees who would have been greedy to acquire the grapesโ sugar. Another hypothesis about this name arrives from a variety of apple (Appiana from Appio) or from an ancient synonym for the Peloponnese.

The palate is just as convincing, fresh and textural, but sinewy, cut with fine and salty minerals.
