Tasting note

Chateau Saint-Georges sits on a single south-facing slope in Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion, one of the small satellite appellations just north of Saint-Emilion on Bordeaux's Right Bank. The site's history reaches back to Gallo-Roman times, and the present chateau was rebuilt in 1772 to a design by the architect Victor Louis. The Desbois family bought the estate in 1891, replanted the phylloxera-ravaged vineyard on grafted rootstock, and still run it today. The wine is a Merlot-dominant blend with smaller parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, matured in French oak barrels and bottled at the chateau. Expect a supple, medium-bodied Right Bank red with ripe cherry fruit, touches of cocoa and liquorice, and a cedary note from the oak. Serve at around 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, duck or aged cheese.
