Tasting note
Five bottles, one brewery, five completely different ideas of what sake can be.
Nagano Meijo has been brewing in Chikuma since 1689, and this pack is the fastest way to understand why their range has become a benchmark. It moves from a crisp, food friendly everyday classic through to a white koji sake built for BBQ, taking in the brewery's flagship Junmai Daiginjo along the way. If you have only ever had house sake at a Japanese restaurant, this will reset your expectations.
What's in the pack
- Tokubetsu Junmai Tanada 16%. The everyday classic and the number one selling sake in the region. Crisp, dry and balanced, and it drinks well anywhere from chilled to warm. Sashimi, grilled fish, yakitori.
- Junmai Ginjo Tanada (Modern Dry) 16.9%. A modern dry style with natural citric acidity from white koji, closer to a lemon sour than anything traditional. Nashi pear, lemon myrtle and white pepper. Oysters, calamari, fried fish.
- Junmai Ginjo Kisekirei 15.6%. Sweet, sour and juicy, with a lemony aroma and bright acidity. Think of it as the sake answer to Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc. Fried chicken, pizza, soft cheese.
- Junmai Ginjo Momoiro Inko 16.3%. An Australia exclusive and unlike anything else in the category. Sweet, sour and smoky, built specifically for meat and BBQ, with a richness that stands up like red wine. The recipe stays a guarded secret.
- Junmai Daiginjo Tanada la Grace 16.2%. The flagship, made under the motto "More Rich, More Complex." Yamada Nishiki polished to 39%, with white peach, elderflower and sweet melon over a gently earthy finish. Lobster, scallops, barramundi.
How to drink it
Serve the Tokubetsu Junmai and Modern Dry well chilled, or gently warm the Tokubetsu on a cold night. Keep Kisekirei and la Grace cold and in a white wine glass rather than an ochoko, as both open up with a bit of air. Momoiro Inko is the one to bring out at a barbecue.
Sold as a five bottle pack, 3.6L total.
