Tasting note
Normandin-Mercier, a cognac house founded in 1872 near La Rochelle, bottled this single vintage Petite Champagne from the 1976 harvest. The house remembers 1976 for its early drought, which gave eaux de vie of rare aromatic concentration and richness. Each year the vintage casks are unsealed to draw about a hundred bottles.
The ageing followed a careful path. The spirit spent its first 18 months in new Tronçais oak, lightly toasted so the wood would give its flavour slowly and evenly, then 8 years in seasoned casks, before finishing its time in old barrels. Every stage was carried out under the control of the BNIC, the cognac interprofession. It is bottled at 41.4% in a 50cl bottle.
Tasting. Fine, supple and balanced on nose and palate alike, with lily and orange peel. The house adds a lovely first freshness of exotic fruit, followed by long, indulgent notes. A very natural cognac.
More from the house is in our Normandin-Mercier collection.
