Why Kavalan Whisky Is the Best: The Awards, the Climate and the Casks

We think Kavalan whisky is the best in the world right now. That is our opinion, not a measured fact. The evidence: World's Best Single Malt at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards, Distiller of the Year in the 2026 Icons of Whisky, and Whisky of the Year at the International Whisky Competition in both 2025 and 2026.

This page shows our working: the results by year with a source for each, why a distillery in subtropical Taiwan tastes the way it does, and how to test our view with a glass in your hand.

Quick picks

  • Kavalan LÁN: floral and gently sweet, from ex-bourbon, port and wine barriques. Joint winner of the top single malt prize at the 2025 Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition.
  • Kavalan Solist Oloroso Sherry Cask: single cask, cask strength and dark with sherry. The Solist Oloroso line took the top single malt prize in Tokyo in 2026.
  • Kavalan Classic: the distillery's first release and the plainest statement of its house style, with mango, honey and vanilla.

Is Kavalan whisky good?

Yes, and the reason is easy to taste. The house style is clean tropical fruit over vanilla and cream. The tasting notes for Classic run to mango, orchid, honey, coconut and vanilla, and when the spirit goes into sherry or port casks that fruit still lifts the darker flavours rather than disappearing under them.

Outside scoring backs that up. The Beverage Testing Institute tastes blind, charges producers a fee to enter and publishes its results at Tastings.com. It listed 38 Kavalan whiskies in its July 2026 reviews, and 35 of them scored 90 points or more. The seven bottles we recommend below landed between 92 and 95. Its panel called Classic "a silky, well balanced single malt with delicious fruit, earthiness, and a long, spicy citrus accented finish".

Critics and judges have been saying this for years. Whisky Advocate's Dominic Roskrow gave Solist Vinho Barrique 93 points in 2012 and wrote that it was "far richer than any wine cask-matured whisky has a right to be". When the International Wine & Spirit Competition named Kavalan its Distiller of the Year in 2017, the judges said the distillery had "earned some of the highest awards ever seen across all the products entered into the competition".

What awards has Kavalan won?

Here are the results we could trace, newest last. Where the source is Kavalan's own press release, the table says so.

Blind judging matters here, because it means reputation is left at the door. The Tokyo organisers say brands were kept hidden from their 316 judges in 2026. The International Whisky Competition scores each entry blind across 15 criteria on a 100-point scale. Kavalan's own release on the 2026 World Whiskies Awards describes a three-stage blind tasting of entries from 46 countries and regions. Not every line in the table is a blind tasting of one bottle, though. Producer and distiller titles reward a whole distillery, and we could not find a published method for the Icons of Whisky.

Kavalan counts more than 1,000 international gold medals in total. We have not audited that number and our case does not rest on it. The table above is enough.

Why does Kavalan taste the way it does?

The distillery is in Yilan County on Taiwan's north-east coast and belongs to King Car Group. It was built in 2005, ran its first spirit on 11 March 2006 and released its first whisky in 2008. Three things explain the flavour.

Rows of stacked oak casks in a tall warehouse with hazy light from high windows

The heat

Ian Chang, Kavalan's master blender at the time, told The Whiskey Reviewer that Yilan runs about 15 degrees Celsius warmer than Scotland or Ireland, and that the goal was to "change the method of production of whisky to suit a hot climate". The Whiskey Wash reported five-storey warehouses with no temperature control beyond closing the doors from June to October, at roughly 24 to 27 degrees Celsius on the bottom floor and routinely above 43 degrees on the top.

That heat pulls flavour from the oak quickly. "With the heat, we have high extraction of wood," Chang told The Whiskey Wash. It also costs whisky: InsideHook put the angel's share at 12 per cent in Taiwan against 2.5 to 3 per cent in Scotland. The late Dr Jim Swan, Kavalan's consultant, believed eight years was the ideal age for its single casks. Kavalan did not put an age statement on a whisky until a 15 Years Old in 2025, and Chang has said that he and Swan set out to make whisky for flavour rather than age.

The water and the stills

Kavalan credits the meltwaters of Snow Mountain for its water. After a 2016 expansion, the IWSC reported 20 copper stills, all built in Scotland by Forsyths. So the equipment is familiar to any Scotch drinker. What happens in the warehouse is not.

The casks

The range reads like a wine cellar. Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, Moscatel, Fino and Amontillado sherry casks, ruby and tawny port barriques, and wine barriques that are shaved, toasted and re-charred, which Kavalan calls STR. Our guide to sherry styles explains what each of those wines brings. The Solist bottlings are filled from one cask at full strength, with no added colour and no chill filtration.

Does an award make it the best?

No single award does, and we would rather say that before you do. Competitions judge only what is entered. Plenty of medals get handed out. Tastes differ, and if you love heavily peated island malt, Classic is not going to change your mind. A single cask result also belongs to that cask: the Solist Oloroso line won in Tokyo in 2026, but every Solist bottle comes from its own cask, so the one on our shelf is not necessarily the winner. Judges split, too: the Peatist Oloroso Sherry Cask line was the International Whisky Competition's Whisky of the Year in 2026 at 96.97 points, and the Beverage Testing Institute gave it 89 the same year.

What persuades us is the pattern. These results run from a newspaper tasting in 2010 to competition wins in 2026, come from different organisers in different countries, and take in everything from a multi-cask 43% bottle in LÁN to single casks at full strength. That breadth, year after year, is why we are willing to use the word best.

How can you judge Kavalan for yourself?

Start with these seven bottles. The scores are from the Beverage Testing Institute's July 2026 reviews. Where its sample's strength differs from what we list, the table says so.

Bottle of Kavalan Solist Oloroso Sherry Cask single cask strength single malt whisky

Bottle What it is Strength Score
Classic Mostly refill and ex-bourbon casks, some sherry. Mango, honey, vanilla. 40% 92
Distillery Select No.1 Refill casks. Pineapple, spiced apple, soft and creamy. 40% 93
Concertmaster Port Cask Finish American oak, then a port barrique finish. Brown sugar, red berries, baked apple. 40% 94
LÁN Ex-bourbon, port and STR barriques. Jasmine, orange blossom, dark berries. 43% 94
Triple Sherry Cask Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel casks. Dates, candied nuts, toffee. 40% 92, sample at 43%
Solist Oloroso Sherry Cask One Oloroso cask, uncoloured and not chill filtered. Cherry, plum, dark chocolate. Cask strength, varies by cask 95, sample at 54.8%
Peatist Ex-Bourbon Cask Peated malt, one ex-bourbon cask. Tropical fruit, vanilla, a line of smoke. Cask strength, varies by cask 94, sample at 55.6%

Here is the test we would run. Pour 30 ml of Classic beside 30 ml of the single malt you know best, whether it comes from our Scotch regions guide or our Japanese whisky guide. Taste each neat, then with a few drops of water. A 30 ml pour at 40% is about 0.9 standard drinks, and a cask strength pour holds more, so measure it.

Once you have a view, our guide to which Kavalan to try first matches the bottles to what you already drink. Classic also makes a very good whisky highball, and if you prefer smoke there is more in our peated whisky range.

Kavalan whisky FAQ

Is Kavalan the best whisky in the world?

We think so, and this page shows why, but nobody can measure it. No competition tastes every whisky, and tastes differ. What we can show is a run of top results from different judges, from World's Best Single Malt in 2015 to Whisky of the Year in 2025 and 2026.

Is Kavalan better than Scotch?

Better is personal, and Scotch covers a huge range of styles. Kavalan has beaten Scotch in blind judging, including a 2010 tasting organised by The Times newspaper, and took World's Best Single Malt in 2015. We would call it different in flavour: more tropical fruit, and quicker oak.

Has Kavalan won World's Best Single Malt?

Yes. The World Whiskies Awards named Solist Vinho Barrique World's Best Single Malt in 2015, and Solist Amontillado Sherry World's Best Single Cask Single Malt in 2016. Both results are on the awarding body's own pages, linked in the table above. They were single cask bottlings, so each honour belongs to its cask.

Who owns Kavalan?

Kavalan belongs to King Car Group, a Taiwanese beverage company founded by Tien Tsai Lee, who also founded the distillery. The site in Yilan County was built in 2005, ran its first spirit in March 2006 and released its first whisky in 2008. King Car chairman YT Lee speaks for the distillery today.

Which Kavalan has won the most?

Nobody publishes a bottle by bottle tally we trust, so we will not guess. The Solist line holds many of the biggest titles: Vinho Barrique in 2015, Amontillado in 2016, Fino in 2025 and Oloroso in 2026. In our range, LÁN and the Solist Oloroso line carry the most recent top results.
